8 outdated notions of entrepreneurship
8 outdated notions of entrepreneurship Over the course of the last year, Ive interviewed a lot of people about entrepreneurship. The common thread running through all the interviews is that entrepreneurship is different than it was even five years ago. Barriers to entry are lower than ever, and if you measure success in terms of personal growth and flexible work, then the success rates for entrepreneurs is sky high. Entrepreneurship has changed to become more appealing to a wider range of people. Heres a list of the old and new ways of thinking when it comes to starting your own business: Old: Entrepreneurs are born with a specific set of character traits. New: Entrepreneurship is learned. There is no, single way to be an entrepreneur. Old: Raise money and spend a lot of it on advertising. New: Raise no money and spend no money on advertising. Old: Women will get power in corporate America and change it. New: Women are getting what they want by leaving corporate America to start their own businesses. Old: Climb the coprorate ladder, learn the ropes, then start a company. New: Start a company to get out of climbing the corporate ladder. Old: Entrepreneurship is all or nothing. New: You can test the waters by starting a company while you have a corporate job. Old: Starting a business is risky. New: Staying in corporate life is risky. Most businesses succeed, most jobs end. Tips For Women Who Want to Have a Career and Have Kids
Tips For Women Who Want to Have a Career and Have Kids Life today is based on the possible, not whatâs impossible. People donât build business empires and create new and innovative products because they have no faith in themselves and the world of possibility that lays at their feet. They take leaps of faith and they pioneer world changing technologies. They know that impossible is a word that never exists in the dictionary of a person who changes the world. And they embrace the notion that believing in possibility is the path to making something out of nothing. Vision, innovation, perseverance, power, ability, passion and the like are all words that drive change and success. âThat canât be doneâ isnât a phrase that should exist in the modern world. Because the world is filled with so much opportunity, a woman who wants to do it all in her life shouldnât be told that she canât. You make your own way in this life and life might present itâs challenges, but the more you fail, the more you learn and grow. If youâre a woman who wants to have it all, a career and kids included, here are some tips for you to consider. You Can Break Down, But Donât Break You have the ability inside you to completely change and transform the world. If you want to have a successful career, but you also want to have and raise a family, thatâs going to come with sacrifices. But that doesnât mean it canât be done. Remember that through the process, itâs possible that you may break down and have a cry. But donât break. Donât give in. You are not the first woman to choose this path. Many have come before you and have proven that it can be done. The internet is full of inspiring womens success stories. Read the stories of these four successful women recently featured on Ms Career Girl. Find the Best of Both Worlds You might want to consider looking into business opportunities that allow you to work and have your kids hang out with you at the same time. Your office can also be a place where kids are welcome, so keep that in mind. Youâve got the multitasking skills and youâve got the drive, so never settle for a career that rules your every move in life. Find the time to have a career that allows you to be a mom as well. Itâs much easier in todayâs world than one might think. And remember that theres always the options of doing remote work at home, or starting your own business. If youre accustomed to an office environment, these might take some adjustment, but the rewards can be substantial. Find a Solid Support Group You are superwoman, but even superwoman needs a break at times. There will be times when you canât bring the children to work, there will be times when you need some sanity and alone time. For these times, find a solid support group. This might be family, it might be friends, it might be a church group, a ladies group, or a random person that can watch your kids for you at the drop of a hat. Both a career and a family are full time jobs. But as long as you donât give up, work to find a career that is flexible, and you have people help, youâre on your way to making a real difference in the world. What steps can you take to earn a STEM education, decide on the right major and job field?Practical reasons to choose STEMevalLetâs start with a few practical reasons â" aside from an interest in science, a love of tinkering with gadgets, an affinity for drawing up blueprints, or math skills â" why you should want to choose a STEM field for your career.STEM graduates are in demand, with only 16 percent of American high school seniors proficient in math and interested in a STEM career. Projected job growth in these fields, however, ranges from 16 percent to an incredible 62 percent by 2020. The average expected growth in occupations across the board, for comparison, is about 14 percent. In other words, if you are in high school and have a knack for one of the STEM field s, it is worth pursuing.evalEarning potential for STEM-related jobs is also higher than the average career field. For example, architecture and engineering careers, within three years of graduating, earn a median salary of $50,000. On the technology and math front, computer, statistics, and mathematics majors earn about $43,000 per year. Non-STEM social science majors, meanwhile, make about $33,000 per year.A non-entry-level software developer in May 2013, according to the STEM Coalition, had a median wage of $92,660. There will be a total of 218,500 job openings between 2012 and 2022, with projected employment in 2022 at nearly 753,000.Photo Credit- Pixabay.comWhy so many openings? Studies show that companies are turning to business intelligence when making decisions. This means analyzing data â" with 30 percent of mid-sized businesses in 2014 reporting that business analytics were a top priority. On top of that, with more technology comes a need for coders. With the proliferation of affordable smartphones comes apps of all types, each needing someone to write code for the software.Architectural and engineering managers had a median wage of more than $128,000, with 60,600 job openings between 2012 and 2022. About 207,000 people will be employed in those positions by then. Unlike some of the other positions, an engineering manager typically require about 5 years of experience.Mathematicians slide into the middle of STEM careers with a median salary of $102,440, though with lower employment numbers â" only 4,300 projected by 2022. Math-related positions, such as analysts, actuaries, or statisticians, typically require a Masterâs degree.Making the right university choiceHow can you get a STEM degree? By choosing the right university. TIME reported in April of 2016 that where you obtain a degree from matters. Alverno College in Milwaukee reported annual salaries of $34,600, for their STEM graduates.Photo credit- Pixabay.comTo contrast, graduates from private colleges like Bloomfield College in New Jersey were earning $69,300 after five years. But, graduation takes longer â" only 32 percent of Bloomfield students earned a degree within six years.evalA degree from a prestigious school does not mean earning a higher salary, however. Graduates from both Brigham Young and San Diego State universities, both noted for their academics, reported not receiving a significant pay boost. There are certain colleges that provide better STEM educations. Hereâs Forbesâ Forbesâ list of the 21 best STEM colleges from last year. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology tops the list, also taking the No. 5 spot in overall colleges. Standouts on the list include the US Naval Academy, Cornell, the US Air Force Academy, Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo, and the University of Portland.Of course, in the end, the choice is ultimately yours. There are grants specifically meant for STEM students â" hereâs a list of grants by state. Many universities, even those with higher tuition, also offer grants or scholarships to make tuition more palatable. This list provides links to national STEM-related scholarships and internship opportunities.Once you have narrowed the list of potential colleges, consult each universityâs financial aid advisors to explore your options.Photo Credit -flickr.comContinuing educationYour STEM education may not end with a Bachelorâs. In some fields, such as math, obtaining a Masterâs degree could not only be beneficial, but required for a job. Pathways for both Masterâs and doctoral degrees can be found here.Universities often offer incentives including more grants and scholarships, meant specifically for postgraduate degrees. If, instead, you take a career path straight out of an undergraduate degree, your employer may be willing to foot at least part of the bill for continuing education, in order to further improve employeesâ skills. With above-average job prospects and salaries in the next few years, STEM fields show excellent career opportunities. There are grants and scholarships meant just for STEM students, to ease the burden of tuition. Employers or the university itself may help with postgraduate degrees. If you have any interest in science, technology, engineering, or math, now is the perfect time to position yourself for the growing job market.

The Untold Ethics of Teaching Social Media to College Students - CareerEnlightenment.com
This is why Iâm so driven to create a standards-based social media training curriculum. If we can all talk the same languageâ"if we can all teach social media the same wayâ"then we might actually be able to gauge whether weâre doing a good job or not.Iâve recently seen social media presentations using outdated screenshots, talking about features that donât exist anymore, and offering advice that Iâve found to be ineffective with employers. This is hurting our students.Calling All Caring College Career AdvisorsItâs not enough to scare students into locking down their Facebook accounts, because thatâs just not going to happen.(Letâs be serious.)Itâs not enough to show students how to set up a LinkedIn profile, because thereâs a good chance they wonât properly nurture their account afterward (if they even show up to such a class!)Students need to be educated about WHY social media is a non-negotiable element of their job search. They need to understand the benefits of correctly using their accounts. In other words, they need help with motivation and strategy.Thatâs where you come in.Truth be told, motivating a young mind is not easy but you donât have to do it alone.Thatâs where I come in.I research best practices for using social media to find work for a living. I do this so you donât have to. This is MY job.Since our schools are not doing it, then why not go for a little help? (from the hairstylist, not the plumber, of course)Download a social media training syllabus and learn about my curriculum complete with lecture notes, slides and other research to make your job teaching social media skills even easier.
